5 StarsLearn from the Real McCoy - How to Hear God's Voic
Leighann McCoy's book on spiritual warfare challenged me, so I knew her latest release, "A Woman's Guide to Hearing God's Voice," would be a must-read. All I can say is that Leighann is the real McCoy! She speaks not in religious platitudes but from a heart that has wrestled with God through hard things. As I read, Leighann's conversational, friendly manner drew me in. Sometimes I found myself in laughter and sometimes in tears, living through each experience with her. Yet, this book is not one to skim through quickly. Alongside the personal stories and stories of other women, there's a lot of meaty, biblical teaching. Leighann doesn't mince words, and she's not afraid to tell it like it is. At one point she says, "I'm almost certain that the reason so many of us have such a hard time hearing God's voice is that we want Him to bless our namby-pamby faith walks. We are not serious enough about honoring His holiness to pursue holiness in our everyday lives. In fact, we're more concerned about what He is or isn't doing to bless us than we are about what we are or are not doing to honor Him." Ouch! Needless to say, it's a challenging and life-changing book, especially if you take the time to journal through the personal reflection questions at the end of each chapter. You can even take it a step further by reading the book with a friend or a small group and working together through each chapter's discussion questions. I like how Leighann equates the meantime (the time of waiting between the promise and the fulfillment of the promise) as "mean" time and how that "mean" time is the "main time" we experience spiritual growth. She says, "If we truly believe that God is intimately acquainted with our deepest desires and that His sovereignty rules the details of our lives, we will rest in our current circumstances no matter what they are." Leighann also lists some very insightful ways in which we sometimes stay stuck in the mud of disappointment and confusion. She assures us God is with us in the desert and that He cares. Yet, in doing so, she alsodraws attention to the fact that this life, with all it's joys and trials, is really not all about us. Rather, it's about God's ongoing plan and His choice to include us in fulfilling that plan. "A Woman's Guide to Hearing God's Voice is divided into four parts. Part One, Wrestling With God, deals with lining up our pictures with God's promises and learning to trust Him. In Part Two, Leighann addresses the age old question, "Where Was God When. . . ," drawing upon biblical examples and helping us recognize God's presence in our lives. Part Three, Let God Define Good, shows how God uses "crazy" to teach us new things about ourselves and reveals His power and love. God Will Make a Way is Part Four. It deals with learning to live in expectation of the new thing God is doing. Any woman desiring to hear God's voice more clearly will find this book a challenging and insightful read. It's guaranteed to help serious readers grow in intimacy with God, teaching them how to press in to Him. * Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher for this review. However, the opinions expressed are my own.
