"Jubilant, energetic and spirit-filled are just a few of the words that describe the music, ministry and life of gospel singer, Ami Rushes. Rushes, a Southern California native, is a singer's singer whose only desire is to sing God's praises. Those are pretty powerful words, being that they emanate from a woman who comes from a family of which she says, "We had no musical people, I was not exposed to the Bible or traditional Christian teachings." At that, one might ask, how did a person from such a background end up singing Traditional Gospel Music? Her inroads into the world of gospel music came via one of the most profound pioneers in gospel, the late Rev. James Cleveland. Rushes fondly states of the encounter, "I went to a revival years ago and it just so happened the preacher was Rev. James Cleveland. A friend of mine pushed me up to him and said, 'Do you have room for one more in your choir?' He said, 'Come on,' and that was the beginning." After that she became a member of Cleveland's famous Cornerstone Institutional Baptist Church in Los Angeles, as well as a member of his award winning Southern California Community Choir.
