I feel Explode the Code offers fun, worthwhile work pages for the children. It repeats words enough on the pages that my 1st grader has learned to spell most of the words. The material is listed for teaching phonics, but my 1st grader seems to be learning spelling more, as he can read quite well already.

I considered using this curriculum without the teacher's manual at first, but decided against it. I know some who do not use it, but I think the teacher's manual makes a big difference for my student and me. The manual scaffolds each lesson well and provides suggestions for different learning styles. The format may require too much writing for a kindergartner. However, you could use the texts verbally at this level. I love this program and will be using all the books for Explode the Code and Beyond the Code (Comprehension). My son (first grader) likes the format; it has gotten easier for him as he has become a better writer and reader. The format of the books is basically the same for all levels. We also use the 1/2 series for Explode the Code concurrently to bolster those phonics skills and to ensure retention. The Code Cards are a good supplement as well. Great materials!

To enjoy this curriculum, the student must enjoy doing worksheets. My youngest son loved explode the code and is an early reader. My older son however did not like all the worksheets, so we did a few of them and focused more on the extra activities given in the teacher Manuel and used alot of manipulatives for spelling with explode the code.

My son was in keindergarten (real school) at the time. He was reading and they had no time for him so they gave him a workbook (I don't remember why) and sent him to the library most days. He did not return to school. He worked through the workbook on his own. He didn't do much. I kept it to use with his brother. It is nice-the workbooks build on each other.
