This book began as a series of chapel messages given at Wheaton College during Phil Ryken's first year as president. Because of the performance-oriented nature of Wheaton's students, Ryken vowed to speak as often as he could about the grace of God, helping students to see that they are not defined by who they are and what they do, but rather by who Jesus is and what he has done for them in his death and resurrection. As such, Ryken's message is foundational in a much broader sense; that is, it clearly and powerfully addresses the transforming power of grace that is essential for every Christian. Reading through Ryken's addresses, one can clearly see his experience as an expositor, as a preacher, and as a shepherd.
