George Washington wrote these principles of behavior out by hand by the age of 16 while aspiring to the status of Gentleman. Washington's Rules of Civility and Decent Behaviour 110 rules were based on a set of rules composed by French Jesuits in 1595. The first English edition of these rules was available in 1640 by Francis Hawkins, a 12-year old son of a doctor. It is from that work that Washington seems to have created this simplified version.
