Horizons Math for younger students is a colorful, easily prepared way to do early Math. Occaisionally I had to bring in manipulatives if my son was having a hard time with a subject but for the most part, we could spend two to three minutes looking over all the problems for that day and then he could work independently on his Math. I would then check it and we'd go over any he missed. You should know that Horizons Math runs at a higher skill level than other math curriculum. So the grade 1 book was really working on grade 2 math levels. IF you look at their website, you will note that they let you know this ahead of time. This works fine if you start your child with Horizon's Math as I did. We started with K and did 1 and 2. Good curriculum for the price.

The amount of material on the pages was overwhelming to my son. He could work the problems, but there were too many problems too close together. He would look at the page and feel like giving up before he started. If I would rewrite the problems with space, he was fine, but he was really unable to work the problems on the pages as presented. However, I really did like the spiral approach, with new areas introduced while keeping up with areas previously studies. Also, the color on the pages was nice. I think this would really be great curriculum for some students. It just didn't work for my son.
