I really like Saxon at the lower elementary materials. Io think it explains concepts in a way that is easy for them to understand and that they enjoy. It uses manipulatives and alot of interaction.

The Saxon Teacher DVD is superior to the DIVE, although as each child is different, some do just fine without the step by step instruction of the Saxon teacher. HOWEVER, if a parent is unsure of how to explain an incorrect answer just using the solutions guide-the Saxon Teacher does that for you with each and every problem from the work assigned. Parents/friends who have used this curriculum and sent their children on to High School (private or public) have been amazed at how advanced and well-prepared their children are for the work they receive.

This is a great hands-on curriculum that teaches math concepts in sequential order. The one weakness I think Saxon has overall is lack of repetitive practice. But that can easily be supplemented.

I liked that it tells the parent exactly what they need to say to teach the course, but it becomes somewhat monotonous at times and is a bit redundant and time consuming as well.

Saxon Math is a comprehensive, spiral approach math curriculum. In the lower grades, manipulatives are available to provide hands-on, visual learning for your child. There are supplemental problems for many of the lessons that provide additional practice for your child in the areas he/she might need additional practice. Tests are given frequently to provide a way to evaluate whether or not your child is learning the material well. Also, the daily facts practice provides 'painless' regular review of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, which is foundational for upper level math. The daily practice and mixed practice problems help your child practice what he/she learned in the lesson and then assimilates that material in review that includes past concepts learned. This curriculum has worked well for my two children, who tend to think and learn differently.
