This is a beautiful, visual phonics program, although for my son, I needed other visuals for the phonics sounds for his memorization. I believe if I had used the same phonics for both his Kindergarten and first grades, he would be much further along. Having said that, he reads and comprehends well and does enjoy the different games and things we use for him to learn.

Some of the included readers do not present a solid story/ biography of the subject covered. This especially applies to the first several readers, where vocabulary is necessarily quite limited. My children have been a little confused by what is presented, so I found some easy but more complete stories/ biographies at the library and read those first. Once they were familiar with the main story my children found the readers more enjoyable. As their reading skills progressed, this became less of an issue because the vocabulary expansion allows for a more complete story in the readers.

I only used the Veritas beginnner reader books (which I believe are in the Phonics Museum Grade 1 set) and although unique and unlike others I came across I did not love them. They were a bit strange (somewhat completely nonsensical stories with strange pictures) and did not seem to follow a pattern of phonics learning so that we could not follow in order without a gap in the books because there were many new words that were unfamiliar to the child. I used them with several of my children and they seemed to stumble quite a bit since many words were completely new to them without previous phonics/sounding out knowledge to apply to it. I did not use them within the entire Phonics program so that could be part of the problem as I was teaching another reading/phonics curriculum but there still did not seem to be a general learning pattern that made sense. Overall I kept them on the bookshelf to refer to from time to time as different readers than the standard run of the mill ones and practice for older readers. I had seen them recommended in the Well Trained Mind as beginner readers that were available.

Know the time consumption and effort necessary before purchasing this. While I love the reading and phonics, I was truly unprepared for the prep time with Shurley. And while I'm grateful that we were able to purchase it, I am uncomfortable with the amount of money it cost.

I would say that the reading aspect of this curriculum is very fast paced and does not involve enough prep work before diving into the books. We don't use the readers because they are long for beginner readers and have some difficult words. Although there are means of teaching the difficult words as 'sight words' it makes reading frustrating. My children got burned out on trying to read them. We resorted to simpler readers instead. Also, my children had a very difficult time with the handwriting pages. They have a top line that is bold, a middle line that is lighter, and a bottom line that is bold. Okay until all the lines are stacked on top of one another with about the same amount of spacing between them. Confusing to little ones just learning to write their letters. I have found that I must use a pen or highlighter and make a dashed line across the middle line, and cross out the space between the rows so they know where to start their letters. I have also implemented our own handwriting/copy-work on regular handwriting paper for additional practice.
