I really like the manipulatives available with other math curricula since I am very visual and it was easier to explain the concepts.

I used to use Saxon years ago and for some reason we chose to venture out and try other options such as math u see, switched on school house, video text, singapore math (I can't remember if we tried others). After 13 years of homeschooling I have to say there is no other foundational math I would ever consider using in the k-6 range other than saxon. Some say it is repetitive........but I find the children need reinforcement. If there is anything that the child does not learn in saxon it is not due to the curriculum. I wanted to mention we always had high test scores when using saxon as well. We usually used the level higher than where the child should be (for instance....my child is in 5th grade we would start with the 6th grade equivalent.

I have used Saxon with all three of my children. I like it because each lesson is clearly defined with instructions and sample problems to reinforce each lesson. There are tests available after every five lessons with clear guidelines on when to administer them. I also like that the child can read through the lesson independently and proceed with it if they have a good understanding. Thus it did not require teacher participation for every lesson.

People may complain about the repetition, but you are not required to do every question. We often do only the odd-numbered problems. Buy from Rainbow Resources for a better price.
