My son loved diagramming sentences. I didn't feel like adequate information for the teacher was provided. Shurley English worked better for my son than it did for me. However, I think that Shurley English is thorough and a wonderful program for teaching grammar.

Shurley english will give students a complete grounding in how a sentence is put together using jingles and a question-and-answer-flow, which is both auditory and visual in nature. The curriculum has excellent editing and vocabulary components,a lso. The only weak spot is the writing portion; however, after fifteen years of homeschooling, I've come to believe that there isn't an all-in-one English program that covers it all well. They all have weak points. We substiuted a different writing program. Reading is not included in any grade level. If teaching multiple students, use the higher grade level. My 10yo daughter is working through the high school level. She's heard the older brothers reciting the jingles and zipped though the lower levels!

Shurley English is thorough. It can get to be over-whelming for a student who struggles or quite tedious for a quick learner. However, since it provides thorough scripts for the teacher, I found it quite easy to move through quickly if easy for my student or know that new material is in the lesson. The cost is the biggest obstacle for this curriculum.

Shirley English worked so well with my son who hated all English programs we tried. The jingles werea great way for him to memorize the information. The reviewing of the material works somwell to make sure he has the concept. New information is presented in small increments so as not to overwhelm. We just appreciate this program so much.
