Description of The Homeschool Experiment by Charity Hawkins
A novel for moms set in the hilarious, hard, and beautiful world of homeschooling. It's the perfect first book for those just starting out on their homeschooling journey, or beginning to consider the idea, and it's a reminder to the verteran homeschooler that you're not alone. It's sort of like living in the house of a homeschool family for a year. You see the daily challenges, but also the rewards. With refreshing humor and honesty, Hawkins offers moms encouragement in their noble work at home, a chance to laugh at the moments only a mom would understand, and a reminder to cherish those gifts right under their roofs- those wild, irrational, precious people-their own children. Though the book deals with homeschooling, it also addresses the larger question, "What happens when you feel called to do something that seems entirely too big for you?" Between laughs, don't be surprised when you pick up ideas that will simplify your own homeschooling plan. So, come join Julianne and her co-op friends as they navigate through a hard but humorous year of diapers, dinners, husbands, meltdowns, and math lessons. And that's just September.

 Easy Read, Good Tips
I was given this book by a friend who knows of my plans to homeschool my children, but as my only child is currently just 16 months, I figured there was nothing in it for me yet. However, in need of a nice, easy bedtime read, I opened the cover and found myself quickly entertained, encouraged in my conviction to homeschool, and dog-earing many pages to refer to in the future! Although the front clearly states "a novel," I was halfway through the book before I realized it was fiction - it reads exactly like a memoir, which is my only critique of the book in general. It is actually a great source of schooling ideas, encouragement for the homeschool family, and empathy for the over-worked, over-stressed mom, but as a piece of fiction it fell flat. There was no plot, just an overview of one woman's crazy first year of homeschooling. If you are looking for encouragement or comraderie in the homeschooling realm, this book is a great choice, but if you are reading purely for entertainment, you will probably want to look elsewhere. Overall, though, I enjoyed the book and would purchase it for other moms who are currently homeschooling or who are looking into the possibility. Lots of educational tips and wisdom inside!
