I have actually used this program for 4 years, using vol 1-4 with my children starting in 1st grade. I have used it at the same time with another child for 2 years in grades 1-2. I only could choose one grade level and one learning style. I feel it offers enough ways to engage learners of all types. It includes plenty of hands on activities for my kinesthetic learner, as well as coloring sheets to keep her hands active while she listens to the stories. It includes book lists for my visual learner. She reads tons of extra books on her own to continue her learning of the topic. And I read it aloud which covers auditory learners. By using multiples modalities it strengthens their weakest areas by providing practice, while engaging them using their strongest modalities.

Utilizing your local library with this curriculum makes it a fantastic program. You have to work fairly quickly through the material to finish the book, so feel free to drop some of the chapters so you can move at a comfortable pace for your child.

I would highly recommend the workbook of supplementary material. The textbook itself is written in nice, short, interesting chapters and sections, but would be quite boring standing alone. My kids love the coloring sheets and hands on activities that go along with the text. They also like to request the suggested additional reading books on each culture and we love reading them together.

For very young students (K-3) SOTW is a good stand alone. If possible, try to work it so that you can go through the volumes in the middle school range again, the second time delving into more of the supplemental materials/readings. I *highly* recommend getting a good LARGE map.
