Pirates from North Africa's Barbary Coast were capturing American merchant ships and taking sailors as slaves, demanding ransom and tribute payments that exceeded what the country could afford.

For fifteen years, America sought a diplomatic solution. They tried working with the four Muslim powers (Tripoli, Tunis, Algiers, and Morocco) driving the piracy. Negotiations were failing, and it was time to switch tactics. Jefferson decided to move beyond diplomacy to stand up to the piracy. Sending the U.S. Navy and Marines to blockade Tripoli, he launched the Barbary Wars and began America's journey toward superpower status.

Not one of the most popular events in history, few people remember the heroes who inspired the Marine Corps hymn: “From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli, we fight our country’s battles in the air, on land and sea.”
