The Glorious Mend 03-10-2010
Babes with a Beatitude: Devotions for Smart, Savvy Women of FaithThe Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.
Psalm 34:18
Artist Barbara Bloom said, “When the Japanese mend broken objects, they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold. They believe that when something has suffered damage and has a history, it becomes more beautiful.”
A friend of mine lost her precious daughter. Her grief was almost more than she could bear. One day, she accidentally dropped a valuable vase to the floor. The vase lay before her—shattered into myriad pieces. As she stared down at all the jagged pieces of what had only seconds before been a beautiful glass vase, God spoke to her broken heart, only I can put all the pieces back together. This realization brought her to her knees but also gave her comfort and hope.
Only God can repair a shattered heart. He is the Super Glue that makes broken pieces whole again. When we are broken by tragic circumstances and we cling to Him, He begins to fill in the cracks with new hopes and promises. We become more valuable to God when we are damaged but held together by Him.
