BJU History is wonderful through 6th grade. It changes after 7th grade. I like the information covered at the secondary level; however, I think the way it works the student through that material is lacking. The textbook is good but needs more maps and too quickly covers some topics and important people. The student activity manual should really be sold as supplemental material, as it fails to work the student on anything they read in the textbook. The teacher manual CD is simply the same pictures found in the student textbook. I expected more. The tests are well written, but student scores often don't reflect their daily work and study efforts. The tests often skip the bolded textbook items and major points and instead ask questions from quickly mentioned material. I wouldn't have a problem with that approach if that material would have been reinforced in the activity manual or section quizzes, but it is not repeated. It feels like one person wrote the textbook, another wrote the student activity manual, and a third wrote the tests. Wish this wonderful Chistian presentation of history was more cohesive and student lead for the expensive price!! I spend HOURS lesson planning, adding maps, and teaching note taking. I have heard similar reviews from students at a private school in the area--using BJU 7th and 8th grade. The teacher types a study guide for the students, each chapter-- after observing much of the same. Wish BJU would teach like Apologia does for science!

I would highly recommend you research Bob Jones as a Christian curriculum. We found that their history of controversial racial views did not line up with the word of God and also was offensive to our multicultural home. The DVD programs looked great online but my children soon got bored of it. We liked the appeal of the instructor on screen instead of a teacher in the classroom but over all the DVD's lack in visual appeal. Some are out dated. Let me add that among the guest they have appear, we recall one African American which they used as an example of how illiteracy can cause you great trouble. We used the Online courses for 5th and 7th grade DVD curriculum. There was a lot of printing off the teacher CD's and online materials. After paying so much for the full courses this material should have been included. The curriculum as a whole did not suite my children. Some of the lectures were long and boring. Some of the lessons in math were taught in a complicated way. My husband stopped the class often to teach them in simplistic faster way. In Science they would have a guest speaker. The male would speak in a monotone low voice. He had on a blue shirt in which they placed him in front of a blue background with a plant next to him. Not very visually appealing for children. He didn't show much enthusiasm either. I could go on but I think Bob Jones had a great idea but I do think these DVD's could be a lot better.
