Christian Ropp moves to Birch Creek accepting a teaching position in the quickly growing Amish community. He's set to put the rambunctious school in order while also searching for a wife for himself. If only women were as logical and straightforward as the textbooks to which he is accustomed.
When an accident puts Christian out of commission, a new community member, Ruby Glick, takes over his classroom. Ruby's teaching style clashes with Christian's careful methods and he worries his students will never be the same.
Ruby has a track record of catastrophe and always feels too clumsy and distracted. She is desperate for a chance to prove that she can do more than make mistakes in her life. She throws herself into her new teaching position. When Christian can't seem to stay out of her way, she finds herself slipping back into her old, chaotic tendencies.
What Ruby couldn't anticipate is that Christian's heart is gradually catching up with his mind, and she, too, must decide whether to follow logic or love.
