These basic polite standards had a strong influence on Washington, whose goal was to always live by them. The rules focus on a high respect for others. This then gives us the gift of self-respect and confidence. This book of courtesy applies to all ages and all walks of life. Common everyday skills are addressed such as how to dress, walk, eat in public, and behave to one's superiors.

George Washington wrote these principles of behavior out by hand by the age of 16 while aspiring to the status of Gentleman. Washington's Rules of Civility and Decent Behaviour 110 rules were based on a set of rules composed by French Jesuits in 1595. The first English edition of these rules was available in 1640 by Francis Hawkins, a 12-year old son of a doctor. It is from that work that Washington seems to have created this simplified version.

The full title of this book is George Washington's Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation.
