"The first sound I remember as a little barefoot boy was my daddy's Martin guitar and a five-string banjo," Steven Curtis Champan recalls. It wasn't unusual in his early years to be surrounded by bluegrass and folk music. His dad strummed a guitar, while his dad's friends contributed their musical talents. Scotty Henson played banjo, and Jack Curtis Martin played dobro. He loved the sound so much, he wanted to learn to play guitar so he could join them.
When he was eight years old, he was playing and singing in church with his dad Herb, Sr., his brother Herb, Jr., and his mom Judy. They harmonized as they sang hymns and gospel songs filled with truths about God's grace and love. The lyrics helped plant the seed that would bear fruit in young Steven Curtis Chapman's life, and extend outward to the songs he recorded over the years.
"So, a few years ago I had the opportunity to record a Bluegrass album called Deep Roots and honor the important part of my story," Steven Curtis Chapman explains. "I loved it so much that I wanted to do it again." Deeper Roots: Where the Bluegrass Grows features performances by his bluegrass hero Ricky Skaggs, his friend Gary LeVox (of Rascal Flatts), his son Caleb Chapman, and his daughter-in-law Jillian Edwards Chapman.
"I couldn't have done this without my dad and my brother, Herb, Sr. and Herb, Jr. We recorded a few of these songs life, the three of us sitting around a microphone just like we did when we'd gather around our kitchen table all those years ago, " Steven Curtis Chapman shares.
