In a town not so far away, and a time not so long ago, baby Rose was left in the care of Greenwoods Orphanage, where Mrs. Hartley (Nancy Stafford) and the children under her care became Rose's family. When tragedy strikes Greenwood, Rose (Bailee Johnson) loses the only home she has ever known and is quickly sent to Irongates, where she is met with cruelty as cold as her previous home was kind.
Mr. Crampton (Edward Herrmann), the strict headmaster, dislikes Rose almost immediately, and makes sure all the children are punished for any rule breaking. Rose does have something to look forward to, when she learns that Mr. Crampton's generous brother gives an orange to each child every Christmas. She believes an orange must be the most delicious treat in the world. When Christmas morning comes, Rose is devastated to find out she is being punished again. Christmas is a time for miracles, and Rose just may be about to experience one for herself.
