The Osage shield on the flag is covered by two symbols of peace. One being the Plains-style ceremonial peace pipe representing the rich history of Native Americans in the state, while the other is the classic Olive Branch symbolizing the merger of European Americans. Six crosses, Native American symbols for stars, decorate the symbol as well. The blue field background is adapted from the Choctaw flage, which was used by the tribe in 1860 and carried through the American Civil War.
