Americans are well acquainted with perpetual anxiety. Research reveals anxiety-related issues are the number one mental health problem among women and are second only to alcohol and drug abuse among men. Stress-related issues cost the nation $300 billion each year in medical bills and productivity loss. Implementation of sedative drugs like Xanax and Valium have increased tremendously over the last 15 years. The average high school kid today experiences the same level of anxiety as the average psychiatric patient in the early 1950s.
Why are we so tense? Change is one reason. Sociologists speculate that the world and culture has undergone more changes in the last 30 years than in the last 300. Every day seems to introduce a new set of changes. We are also met with an onslaught of personal challenges in the form of job loss, cancer, divorce, addiction, and bankruptcy. Adding to personal challenges are those of a global nature being downloaded into our lives every day through our fast-paced media. Our parents used to get caught up on world events through the evening news. Now we learn about major events in a matter of minutes.
Anxiety is a part of life. However, as God's Word teaches us, it doesn't have to dominate our lives. In this six-session video-based Bible study, Max Lucado unpacks seven admonitions from the apostle Paul in Philippians 4:4-8 that lead to one wonderful promise: "The peace of God which surpasses all understanding." As he examines each verse, he will reveal how God is ready to give comfort to help us face the calamities in life, view bad news through the lens of sovereignty, discern the lies of Satan, and tell ourselves the truth. We can be anxious for nothing, and discover true peace from God that surpasses all human understanding.
